Summer has my favorite produce. Period.

And one of the most delightful things to come into season is watermelon. When it’s very ripe and juicy, it just can make any day a good one. Since it’s been getting warmer, my desire for all things watermelon does exponentially increase, and this smoothie always comes up in conversation.

This watermelon smoothie is so indulgently creamy thanks to a combination of 6 basic ingredients including watermelon, frozen strawberries, and vegan yogurt. To help flavor it, we have some lime juice and zest along with extra sweetness thanks to the frozen banana added to the mix.

Key Ingredients

  • Watermelon: Scoop out the flesh of your watermelon to make this fun smoothie.
  • Strawberries: I used frozen pre-sliced strawberries for this recipe, but regular frozen strawberries work well here too.
  • Banana: Freeze at least 1 to 2 bananas for the ultimate creamy texture.
  • Vegan Yogurt: I used Forager Project unsweetened variety, but you can feel free to use your favorite vegan brand. I went with this one because it’s both thick and creamy with a nice tang.
  • Lime: Both the juice and zest are needed here.
  • Maple Syrup: Good to add to help balance out the tang from the lime and yogurt.

How to Make a Creamy Watermelon Smoothie

You will need a high speed blend with a tamper to make this smoothie. Add all of your ingredients to the blender and blend on high speed until your smoothie is smooth. If making extra creamy and thick, make sure to use a tamper to help push your frozen fruits close to the blade to help blend them as smooth as possible.

Tips for the Best Watermelon Smoothie Recipe

  • You can adjust the creaminess of your smoothie by adjusting the liquid. The ingredients listed should make it pretty creamy and scoopable, but you can add a small amount of water to help thin it out more. Start with 1/4 cup and then add more as needed.
  • If you’d like to serve your smoothie in your watermelon, use a mini watermelon. Cut it in half, scoop out the flesh and cut the very end of the rind on one end to help level it off so it sits flat on a table. When you make your smoothie, just scoop it up into the makeshift bowl. After you’re done eating, you can compost it.
  • You can replace the banana with frozen zucchini if you are not a fan of banana. Peel your zucchini and then cut it into small chunks and freeze in your freezer for later use.

Is this smoothie healthy?

Watermelon is a very nutrient dense fruit. As the name suggests, watermelon is made up primarily of water, so it is a very hydrating fruit to eat especially during the months it is in season. And, having the water and the fiber paired off together makes it especially powerful for aiding in digestion.

On top of the extra hydration, watermelon is loaded with antioxidants like beta-carotene and lycopene. These antioxidants are especially beneficial for skin health as well as helping to reduce the risk of various chronic diseases.

Pairing the watermelon with antioxidant and fiber-rich strawberries and bananas along with probiotic-rich plant based yogurt truly makes this smoothie extra nourishing and something to feel good about.
